Through outstanding loans to the Collection, the Wallace Collection’s exhibitions programme aims to illuminate and reflect our permanent collections in various ways. An excellent example of how this can work to increase our knowledge of the works of art in the Collection arose during the recent exhibition of silver from the Schroder Collection, when we were able to compare a superb silver-gilt cup in the Wallace Collection, with enamelling attributed to the celebrated Augsburg goldsmith David Altenstetter (c.1547–1617) with a very similar cup in the Schroder Collection, by Altenstetter and another Augsburg goldsmith Jeremias Michael. This enabled us to identify Michael’s mark on the Wallace Collection cup, proving that it too was made by this pair of talented early 17th-century goldsmiths.
