The school holidays are always a busy time for the Museum and this Easter proved to be no exception!

Along with workshops decorating wooden Easter eggs and illustrating comics, families were asked to create a musical story inspired by our wonderful paintings of Venice by Canaletto and Francesco Guardi. Working with artist Marc Woodhead and musician Luke Crookes, the families created sound effects and lyrics based on elements found in the paintings, which included gondolas, acrobats, chatting people, dogs barking and church bells ringing. They then spent some time making and decorating their own boat shaped hat, before performing their soundscape in front of the paintings to a rather bemused but totally enchanted watching public.

You can listen to the songs and soundscapes created by the families below.

The Kids in Museums Manifesto 2012 – 20 ways to make a museum family friendly was launched on Monday 16th January. Kids in Museums is a visitor-led charity working with museums to make them more family friendly.

Their 2012 Manifesto is compiled entirely from visitors’ comments. It gives a powerful voice to children, families and teenagers throughout Britain. Over 300 museums use it as a guide to becoming more family friendly, pledging their support.

The Manifesto was launched here at the Wallace Collection. Over the years, the Wallace has done amazing work with teenagers and children as young curators and guides, such as in 2010’s Shh…it’s a Secret exhibition. ‘We are delighted to host the Kids in Museums Manifesto Launch 2012 because the Manifesto aims are central to what the Wallace Collection believes in – to open up great art to all generations,’ says Christoph Vogtherr, Director.

Find out about all the new points on the Kids in Museums Manifesto 2012 here.

For further information and free hard copies of the Manifesto just email manifesto@kidsinmuseums.org.
