  • This extraordinary helmet was made by Kolman Helmschmid, one of the greatest of the Renaissance armourer-artists. A true sculptor in hardened steel, Kolman created glorious armours for the wealthiest men in Europe, to be worn in battle, tournaments, and parades. His clients included the German Emperors Charles V and Ferdinand I, as well as the Archdukes of Austria and Tyrol and other powerful central European noblemen. This helmet is adorned with plates - embossed, etched, gilt and heat-blued -representing a double-tailed, winged sea-monster.
