This quotation is taken from a letter the Marquess wrote to his most trusted agent Samuel Mawson. Upon transporting items of his collection, the 4th Marquess was concerned they had not been correctly insured against damage or loss. Lord Hertford's income was £250,000 per annum, and his apartment on rue Laffite in Paris provide the ideal circumstance for him to become a serious collector and perhaps the most prolific to make up the Wallace Collection as it stands today.
