This exquisite manuscript illumination was originally the opening page of a manuscript of ‘On the Consolation of Philosophy’, the celebrated work of the early medieval philosopher Boethius. Framed by delicate leaves, flowers and different birds and butterflies, it shows Boethius in a pink robe on the left addressing the personification of Philosophy in blue. She is accompanied by the female personifications of the Seven Liberal Arts (Grammar, Dialectic, Rhetoric, Music, Geometry, Arithmetic and Astronomy).
