This monumental ceramic wine cooler, made in the renowned Fontana workshop in Urbino, Italy, in 1574, is infused with references to Classical Antiquity. The central scene depicts a Roman naval battle; the fantastical grotesque ornament is inspired by ancient Roman decoration. Probably made for Cosimo de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, it was an expensive acquisition for Sir Richard Wallace.
