In 2019, the Wallace Collection hosted a special exhibition in collaboration with iconic shoe designer Manolo Blahník, celebrating the profound influence the Collection’s masterpieces have had on his creative process.
In an exhibition co-curated by the designer, Dr Xavier Bray, Dr Helen Jacobsen and Dr Yuriko Jackall, Blahník's exquisite designs were displayed alongside the paintings, sculpture and furniture that inspired them. Each room explored a particular theme associated with Blahník's work and influences, spanning the theatre and spectacle of the Commedia dell'arte, the fashions inspired by the designer's native Spain, the Rococo style, and his personal interpretation of Englishness. Both Blahník's designs and the accompanying works of art from the Collection reflected a commitment to the highest level of artistry and craftsmanship.

The partnership enabled us to launch an exciting educational programme to complement the exhibition. This included a series of thematic panel talks with the participation of Blahnik himself, shoe-themed community art workshops and access programme, family workshops, and an LGBTQ+ Friday Late.
The show garnered an overwhelmingly positive response, seeing extensive coverage by leading media outlets, including a limited collectors’ edition of Harper’s Bazaar. The display attracted a new and young crowd to the Collection and led to a 30% increase in year-on-year visitor numbers, and a 25% increase in the public programme event attendees.
Our collaboration with Manolo Blahník was awarded Best Creative Collaboration at the 2019 Walpole British Luxury Awards. The award consolidated the Wallace Collection’s status as an institution championing artistic and design excellence past and present.
The Wallace Collection has been a point of reference for me since my early days in London. It was - and remains – one of my favourite museums with the most refined selection of art. I am incredibly humbled and honoured to be a part of the project and have my work displayed at the museum.
